Bertie Mawer - excerpts from a letter dated 16/10/02
......I am still involved in 'n' capacities for K.E.S.(King Edwards School, Witley) since I retired in 1986 and am in the School virtually every day - all voluntary work. I acted as Hon. Appeal Director for a new Sports Centre, opened by the Lord Mayor in 1994; am a Trustee for K.E.S Educational Trust which provides some of the bursaries for pupils with special boarding needs and am much involved with a new City/School Development Committee to launch the Bridewell Foundation Appeal to fund more bursaries.
I have published a new history of Bridewell Royal Hospital/King Edwards School and edit "The Witleian". Oh! and I've just done a piece re. the Old Witleians F.C. for the Centenary of the Arthur Dunn Cup..........
The three Royal Hospitals - Christ's, St.Thomas's and Bridewell held a huge Foundation Service in St.Paul's last March to celebrate the 450th anniversary of their being founded - actually the date of Edward VI's charter is June 26th 1553 but Christ's Hospital took in their first boys and girls in November 1552. (Bertie Mawer was a master for many years at King Edward's School, Witley - a contemporary of Bill Reynolds, Bill Lander and Gerry Cogger. Amongst his pupils were Tim Reynolds, David Childs and Ernie Bignell. He played mainly for Brook, but featured in 13 matches for the Ramblers, most of which were in the late '50s).
