This was probably Ron Etherington's last game as umpire for the Ramblers - a position he had held for some 35 years. He died on February 5th, 1990 at the age of 73. Ron was well respected - so much so that he umpired on several occasions in Hampshire's non-First Class matches - and much to the delight of generations of Ramblers' fieldsmen, kept an inexhaustible supply of Fox's Glacier Mints.
Ramblers won the toss and invited Stoics to bat. Chris Coe and Graham Boxall took the new ball, Boxall securing the first wicket off the last ball of his third over after which he was immediately replaced by Ed Baker. The latter received some tap from opener A.Brown who reached his 50 in 98 minutes but had him lbw for 76 after lunch. 158-4 soon became 206 all out as Coe worked through the later batting and finished with a respectable 4/64 in 20 overs.
Ramblers made an unconvincing start and were struggling on 95-5 when Tom Williams, batting at No.6 entered and took the bowling apart. He scored 50 in 43 minutes and was not out 79 at the end. Of this, only six shots failed to reach the boundary (6 sixes; 9 fours). T.Dann's analysis was particularly noticeable 4-2-42-0.
It was pleasant to see Nic Harper once more at the wicket albeit in the unaccustomed position of No.7 on this occasion. He contributed 24 to the 6th wicket stand of 91 before being caught off Mike Blumberg's gentle spin. As the last 20 overs were called, Ramblers were merely 10 short of their target.
