RAMBLERS v. HASLEMERE 1947-1994

Ramblers first played Haslemere in 1947. There have been 37 fixtures between the clubs - the last in 1994. Ramblers have won 10, lost 14, drawn 8. Two matches have been abandoned and 3 cancelled. Two centuries have been scored - Malcolm Wiseman 105 in 1976 and Nic Harper 101* in 1973. Notable bowling included Jeremy Brown's 8-38 in 1977 and Richard Jefferson's 8-51 in 1962. The picture above shows the old pavilion at Old Haslemere Road - now replaced.

A number of Haslemere players have turned out for the Ramblers, the earliest being Dennis Mackley. One of the quickest bowlers in the area at the time, he took 8-32 against Ancient Mariners at Brook in late September 1948. Surprisingly this was not the best of that season. Hugh Molenaar had taken 9-21 against Walton-on-Thames in July.

The following year, 1949, in a remarkable game v. Stedham,  Mackley took one of 2 hat tricks. He bowled 3 batsmen in his 7th over and finished with 3-18 in 9 overs. Mike O'Sullivan also claimed 3 wickets in one over in the same innings. Mackley played in 15 matches between 1947-57 taking 29 wickets @ 10.24.

Bob Haynes, remembered also as a race-course commentator and enthusiastic member of Haslemere Thespians, played over 20 years (1956-76) in 36 matches, 10 of which were in 1964. Bob usually opened the batting and often kept wicket. His best with the bat was 90* v. Rhine Company, RMA Sandhurst at Brook (including 15 fours) in 1959 helping the Ramblers to a 9 wickets win. He took part in the 1968 Dorset tour.

Ron Glover played in 22 Ramblers matches (1954-1969). Right arm medium, his best performance was against Cpt.R.H.Hawkins' XI at Brook in June 1967 when he secured 6-52. Ron also made the 1968 Dorset tour on which he managed to break a wickerwork chair at the Bramble Hill Hotel (tour HQ) in the act of sitting down in the bar. His early death in 1970 - collapsing after hitting a drive off the 2nd tee at Hindhead - came as a great shock.

Mick Boxall played in 25 matches (1970-77) taking 39 wickets @ 16.36. His son, Graham, first played in 1989 and has - to date, played in 25 matches scoring 1142 runs including 3 hundreds and 5 fifties averaging 51.91. His 163* at Marsa CC, Malta in 2000 is the highest score by a Rambler on tour and this innings together with the 150 which he scored in 1991 - also on tour in Berlin, makes him the only Rambler to have reached 150 in an innings twice in a career.
