Sydenhurst won the toss an inserted Brook on a green pitch with cloud cover about. Alas a heavy shower just before the start left the bowlers with a damp ball. Richard Holden couldn't really run in; he bowled very well and unfortunately had Jacobs - the key wicket - dropped early on. Jacobs was dropped again and went on to make 122. Eventually both openers succumbed to Brian Davenport's slow left armers. There were good spells also from Paul Francis and Andy Houchin.
Brook's opening bowlers got the ball to pop on a drying wicket and James Straker and Jon Stonebridge had a tricky time. After 15 overs we were only 26/0 but then the game opened up and Stonebridge, in particular, hit some fine blows before falling with the total on 148 with 16 overs left. The other batsmen were faced with tight bowling and a mounting run rate and we could not get close despite Swainson hitting 19 off the penultimate over.
