Played at Devizes C.C.
FRIDAY 8TH AUGUST 2003
A longish journey for most Ramblers on one of the hottest days of a very warm summer to the excellent facilities of Devizes, produced a statistical conundrum but not a victory. Ramblers, awaiting a full complement from various parts of Surrey and Oxfordshire, batted first and made reasonable if not spectacular progress, with no significant individual contributions apart from positive efforts from Rob Jones and Alex Tucker. It was extraordinarily generous of Devizes skipper Andy Hodder to ask two batters to have a second knock when two Ramblers had failed to appear at all (this is the conundrum; do the second innings count for the averages ?), and which allowed a declaration at a reasonable total and with adequate time and overs left.
Devizes batted consistently, and despite some good early bowling
-
particularly from Goodman and Roberts, made the required runs comfortably. A match played in a very friendly atmosphere
-
and with some excellent barbecued burgers to accompany a beer afterwards.
