SYDENHURST RAMBLERS V BANGOR

MON 14 JUL 2003 at Brook

On what must have been the hottest day of the summer so far at Brook, the Ramblers welcomed Bangor CC, from Northern Ireland, on the final match of their Surrey tour. Included in their number was Sam Beckett, a Ramblers tourist to Trinidad & Tobago. The Ulstermen began strongly, reaching nearly 100 for the first wicket in quick time on the very flat track, mainly through the firm hitting of their South African pro Barham, and consolidated further with contributions from all following batsmen - to close with a substantial total of 276 in only 46 overs, leaving the Ramblers plenty of time and overs to get a win. Christian Hudson and Ed Jones, given the conditions, bowled very well in their spells, supported by first class keeping by James Wood.

After losing Simon Swainson early to a leg side keepers’ catch, a stand of over 90 between John Whybrow and James Wood promised much. Neither however was able to go on to a substantial score - as was the case with the remaining batsmen, with the honourable exception of Christian Hudson, who struck a confident 47 (and thoroughly deserved a fifty). The rate required was for the most part out of reach, but the draw was almost achieved with Martin Underwood hanging on with Christian until the last five overs. Barham, for the visitors did the main damage (as he had with the bat).

A losing margin therefore of 56 runs, but a most enjoyable occasion, played in a thoroughly genial spirit. Celery and tomatoes did not move as quickly as anticipated at lunch.
