Message from Hon. Secretary:
Tuesday's match is cancelled; having suffered drop outs, I cannot get a full team (despite exploring every avenue), and I cannot reasonably tell the Stoics any later than now (which I've done). The weather forecast is not great either - both Haslemere and Godalming's says 'chance of rain'; my interpretation of which is that it will p**s down. My thanks to you all for making yourselves available - I'm most grateful.

Letter received from Winton Dean today:
Dear Mike,
I hope that, for the record, you will correct an error in the Brief History of the Ramblers. Your father was indeed the Founder and Captain - but not the original Hon. Secretary. I was - from the very beginning for a number of years (see old fixture cards) and had plenty to do; arranging fixtures etc and occasionally finding players; writing a letter sacking Blackie for theft and so on. I had to give up through pressure of work.
Among others who played for the Ramblers in those days were Alan Moss (Middlesex and England), G. R. Langdale (Somerset) and - I believe, Alf Gover, though I did not play in that match. J. C. W. MacBryan (Somerset and England) played against Ramblers in that first Brook match. The match in which Jack Hobbs made a century was in fact for F.T.G's XI long before the foundation of the Ramblers. There was a naval - as well as military - connection in Cyril McClintock who died a Surgeon Rear-Admiral.
I hope you are keeping well. I am now 91 and in possession of most of my faculties - though hardly mobile.
Yours
Winton.
(Winton Dean was Hon. Secretary 1946-1949. There is no record of Alan Moss actually playing for the Ramblers though he first became known as a member of the "Evening News Colts" in the 1950s. This was run by Alf Gover and George Porter - the latter a regular Rambler at the time. The Ramblers played the ENC at Brook in 1952 - but Moss was not present. I am delighted to add George Langdale to the section of First Class Cricketers who have played for the Club. Jack Hobbs made his century for F.T.Gauntlett's XI v. Ewell Castle School in 1934. 'Mac' McClintock was a very active Rambler in the 1950s - taking part in the very first Club Tour. An obituary notice will be added in due course. The above letter supports Winton's contribution in 2004 to 'Memory Lane'.)
22/03/2007 - received from the Hon. Secretary;
THE 2006 SEASON
The record shows 7 matches played, 2 wins, 2 draws, a tie, and 2 losses — so just about in credit. 5 matches, disappointingly, didn’t happen for various reasons — including the World Cup, and one very rare occasion when the Ramblers could not raise 11.
The two highlights probably were the hugely enjoyable (despite the weather) gathering in deepest Dorset to play the Hampshire Maniacs, when a Saturday evening dinner preceded an 8 wicket victory on the Sunday, starring Graham Boxall’s undefeated 139 — and the other was the tied match against Brook — both sides all out for 224 on a beautiful summer's day, followed by a barbecue.
Great credit to match managers in getting sides together, and overall an enjoyable 60 season
THE COMING SEASON
The season starts with a third tour to Gibraltar at Easter (and the 16 in total since 1990). Three matches will be played, and a touring party that is a subtle mix of youth and experience, and including 4 debutants, has been gathered together - and looks forward immensely to discovering whether it is a Rock and a hard place.
Back home, the summer brings 11 matches against the mixture much as before, with the policy continuing of annually introducing new or renewed fixtures — this year we are delighted to be at Haslemere once more (check history of this fixture in Memory Lane). The Ramblers are pleased too, to be playing Brook at the start of their festival (in lieu of the Brook President’s XI).
Please help the match managers by telling them when you would like to play. Have a great season
BROOK CRICKET CLUB
For those Ramblers that don’t have a playing association with Brook, our sister club, you would wish to know that the club runs two league sides in the Surrey Championship on Saturdays, and two friendlies sides on Sundays; there is plenty of good cricket with the bonus of knowing folks through the Ramblers connection. If you’re interested in joining and playing, please contact me (Brian Davenport) There’s lots more detail at the club website : www.brookcricketclub.co.uk

01/03/2007 - Message received from John Hamilton
Sorry to have to pass on bad news but I went to a school match at Highfield yesterday and was saddened to learn that Malcolm Wiseman lost his brave battle with cancer last Monday (19th) and is being cremated at Guildford Crematorium at 11 a.m. this morning (Thursday). Obituary notice.

Email received from Chris Terry who offers copies of past fixture cards for both Ramblers' Cricket and Hockey Clubs. Please send a stamp addressed envelope to him at Brougham Hall, Penrith CA10 2DE. Click here to view list.
Chris has located a 1981 list which has added 8 more fixtures. The updated known fixture totals can be viewed. Click here.
It is interesting to reflect the Club played over 30 matches per year 1961-1972. Forty-three matches were arranged in 1970 and in 1964 we won 20 of the 35 matches listed. Sadly, we still lack match reports and score details for over 7% of the 1284 fixtures 1946-2006.
