Winton Dean: Discussion on the founding and early years of the Ramblers

01/10/2004

Message received from Hon. Sec.

In case you hadn't heard, it was not possible to play this match because the pitch at Brook could not be prepared due to the weather. The 2004 season is therefore over - and all things working out, the next match will be in Malta at Easter 2005.

13/09/2004

Message received today from the Hon. Secretary:

Brief details of Middleton match on Sunday ; 40 over game, Ramblers 227-5 (Robin Hudson 114), Middleton 197-6, win by 30 runs. There were 5 Hudsons on the team - Robin, Jonathan (Joggy), Christian, Patrick and his twin (whose name I can't remember !). More details to follow.

For information, last game on 26 Sep v Sunbury Squires will now be at Brook with a 12.30 start.

Malta Tour 2005 - Message received from Hon. Secretary:

(some others by snail mail)

Dear All

I now have enough information to allow me to brief you on this tour, so that you can then tell me whether or not you wish to consider being part of it (and I know already some have said 'yes', and some others are less certain). Also you may have some non-Rambler friends who might like to come. Approaching you this way means that if you cannot or don't want to be involved you can tell me now, and you won't be bothered by me further ! Confirmed commitment including deposit will be required in early December.

This will be the Ramblers' second visit to Malta; we went in August 2000 and had an excellent time. The essential details for this one are as follows :

Duration  Saturday 26th March (Easter Saturday) to Saturday 2nd April 2005 (8 days/7 nights, including flying in and out)

Tour party  13 players needed, with wives, girlfriends, children and other supporters most welcome

Matches Three - two v Worth School (from Sussex, also on tour), one v the Marsa Club. All matches played at the Marsa Club.
Match days yet to be fixed.

Itinerary  Aside from the cricket, there will be plenty of time for other activities - which might include some excellent eating out, a
casino visit, golf, and a trip to Gozo. The plan would be to hire a minibus to take us around.

Accommodation  The Sundown Court Leisure Resort has breen recommended to me by the Malta CA; this is situated in
Kappara (2/3 km from Valletta) ands has one or two bedroom apartments which can respectively take between 2/3 and 4/5
people. Two bedroom apartments cost £27 per day, those with one bedroom £18, with a supplement of £3.50 for a third/fifth
person. Breakfast approx £3 (lunch and dinner can also be taken if required). This is very good value; check out the website
    'www.digigate.net/sundown' .

Flights  Return flights are likely to cost between £260 and £160; the earlier I can make confirmed reservations, the cheaper
    they will be.

Cost  It would be prudent to plan on £500 per person to cover flights and accommodation - but hopefully it will be less.

If you have any queries, please ask

PLEASE LET ME KNOW NOW WHETHER OR NOT YOU WOULD CONSIDER BEING PART OF THE RAMBLERS' 15TH TOUR. Please call (01206-564919/07787-876514) or e mail

Regards
Brian

Message received today from the Hon. Secretary:

Two matches left now and we are showing a won 3 lost 3 record. I hope to present a preliminary Malta package to all members in the next few days when I have some hotel prices, in order to gauge response.

11/07/2004

Email received from the Hon.Secretary to advise that the 2004 Northern Tour has been cancelled due to lack of support from playing members.

15/06/2004

Delighted to note that Ashley Mote had been elected as an MEP for SE England under the UKIP banner.

Ashley played several games for the Ramblers in the early 1970s and more often for Brook. He and his wife Nicky lived at Upper Birtley in those days.

Ashley was once assistant to Denzil Batchelor, the cricket author and journalist on "Picture Post". He wrote the award winning "The Glory Days of Cricket". He is a founder member and President of The Hambledon Club which 'honours the memories and great achievements' of those who played on Broadhalfpenny Down 1750-1796 and supports junior cricket at this famous venue today.

Message received from John Hamilton, Club Captain

Several new recruits especially George Lane, new master i/c cricket at King Edwards School, Witley (ex English Universities).

(He opened the batting at Hogs and scored 52 - match report now on site)

27/05/2004

Ramblers beat Hampshire Hogs last Sunday. Details awaited.

18/05/2004

Message received from the Hon. Secretary

After the false start at Blackheath, the Ramblers season begins at Warnford on Sunday against the Hampshire Hogs, led by the Captain.

The match v Portsmouth on Sunday 15th August I am assuming to be cancelled; they made a nonsense with a pitch booking, I offered alternatives, but nothing has been heard. Graham and Rowly, please therefore stand down from management duties for this one.

It was remiss of me (and I have been unequivocally reminded by the Keeper of the Records) not to list the following requirements in the match managers pack sent out to you on 5th April : So, please ensure that you send a scoresheet and brief match report to Michael Gauntlett. Scoresheets should include (for us) as well as names, scores, wickets etc; players' initials, catchers' names, and an annotation as to who is WK ('WK' should do it), and also categorised extras. Any photos would be welcome also - preferably digital, so that they can be e mailed.

If you need more fixture cards, please let me know - I have just had another small run printed.

On the tour front, the following are signed up (solidly I trust) : John Hamilton and Maggie; Richard Gauntlett; Graham Boxall; Mark Haslam and Helen; Mark Milliken-Smith, Sybella, Sam and Kate; Martin Underwood, Nicky and Sarah; Richard Royds; Matt Lee; and me. 9 players and 6 'supporters' therefore, so far. Another 4 or 5 players are needed to complete the party.

In the next few weeks the Captain and I will be discussing and deciding on a proposal to put to the Committee for our next tour - to the sub-continent. The basic parameters presently are for it to be either Sri Lanka or India, to be somewhere in the timeframe Xmas 05 - spring 06, and to last 10 days to a fortnight.

04/05/2004

Message received today from our Hon. Sec.

I've just had a call from Paul Nash, Secretary of Blackheath, saying they cannot play us next Sunday as they have a rearranged Village KO Competition match to play. They were due to play this away last Sunday, were rained off, and the rules say the match then reverts to a home fixture the following week. This is a pity for us, but cannot be helped.

Ramblings 2004

Email received today from the Hon.Secretary:

CLUB OFFICERS

Only one change to the Committee; Rowly Bourne comes in for Richard Gauntlett. For those that don't know Rowly he is at Bristol University and played for Brook 2s and for us last summer; a cordial welcome from all Ramblers.

THE 2003 SEASON

The usual mix of success and near misses, but much enjoyable cricket - particularly in what turned out to be the last match of the season at Brook against Emeriti. There were also club record stands - Harry Hooper and Nick Wood, each with centuries, putting on 256 for the 2nd wicket against Hampshire Hogs, and for the 8th wicket by Somerset Pheasant and Ed Jones, each with half centuries, putting on 105 in the run chase against Emeriti. Against Brook, Douglas Bourne was another centurion, with brother Rowly recording a michelle to make it a good family day out. The tour to Dublin in August was huge fun, although performances off the field were probably better than those on it; severe inroads were made into the black stuff.

THE COMING SEASON - THE 58TH
As before there will be regular fixtures and a tour, and in line with the club policy of expanding our list in a controlled and manageable way, some new opposition including Portsmouth, Sunbury Squires, and Chiddingfold. The fixture card will be with you shortly (after match managers and other matters are finalised)

TOUR TO CUMBRIA AND YORKSHIRE, MONDAY 9TH TO FRIDAY 13TH AUGUST

Thanks to the good offices of our senior management, Chris Terry and Mike Gauntlett, a most attractive packge has been put together for this year's adventure (and the 15th in the present series). The itinerary looks like this :

Monday 9th         pm         Check in at King's Hotel Thirlmere
evening      Barbecue at Brougham Hall, hosted by Chris Terry

Tuesday 10th      10 am        Depart for 11.30 match v Keswick

Wednesday 11th      am        Check out from King's Hotel
10 am        Depart for 11.30 match v Sedbergh
evening     Move to Scotch Corner Hotel, Richmond

Thursday 12th      1 pm        Depart for 2 pm 40 over match v Bedale

Friday 13th        1.15 pm     Depart for 2 pm 40 over match v Richmondshire
8.30 pm     Tour dinner at White Swan, Gilling West

Saturday 14th                 Disperse

As always the tour is for all-comers, as long as we have eleven players ! So the ladies, children and supporters are most welcome, and there is plenty to do in the local area if the cricket has a less than total grip. Double rooms (ie two sharing) will cost £39 per head at the first hotel and £30 at the second; total outlay £168. There will be a request for a modest deposit around May, which will include an element to cover presentation plaques and ties. How you get to t'North is of course under your own arrangements. If you would like to come, please contact Brian Davenport without delay - 01206-564919/davenport@colchester1737.freeserve.co.uk.'
