Fixture Cancellation

The fixture v Colchester Garrison - Friday, August 23rd at Brook has had to be cancelled due to the opposition being unable to raise a team.

Club Records

The recent receipt of a run of fixture cards has helped to fill in the names of clubs with whom we had matches in the past and these have been added to the CLUB ARCHIVE page which has been updated.

Hampshire Hogs' stalwart, 'Jumbo' Fuller has kindly forwarded the scores and details of all but 2 of the fixtures between our clubs that have been missing and it is understood that Hampshire Maniacs will similarly oblige.

This still leaves lots of gaps to be filled and the periods are as follows:

1977 (late June) - 1989 (end)

1994 (June to season end)

Brian Davenport is busy making contact with fellow Club secretaries, and an old friend, Rodney Smithers, who played occasionally for the Ramblers in the '50s/60s and has recently retired from his post at the "Surrey Advertiser", has agreed to check the newspaper's Archive for these periods.

We urge members to search their own lofts and would welcome any information on the matches now listed.

Visiting the President of the Club

Club President and his wife together with the Club's Archivist seen in the former's garden prior to the Brook match on Sunday 14th. While Lionel and Roz are in good shape, he commented that brother Tony had recently been in hospital.

The President also reported that Bill Lander had died earlier in the year. An obituary notice will appear shortly on this website.

Also to appear in the 'Memory Lane' section (we are promised) are contributions from Lionel Wood and Alan Hardy!

Trinidad & Tobago Tour Re-union

Adrian and Caroline Walton provided a splendid barbecue at their home in Haslemere on the eve of the Brook match. The evening was favoured with good weather and a pleasant time was had by those able to attend. Brian Davenport offered a first  - albeit unedited - airing of his video of the T&T trip which rekindled the memories of Maracas Beach, Toco, Nylon Pool and Queen's Park.

Martin Underwood, Wallace Graham, John Hamilton, Greta Gauntlett in conversation with Maggie Harvey

Alan Hardy enjoys his meal with Jon and Jane Stonebridge. Sybella Milliken-Smith smiles for the camera

while daughter Kate is persuaded by her Dad that it is bedtime.

Ramblers v Brook - 1946-2001

The fixture at Brook on Sunday 14th (11.30am start) is - subject to the missing records coming to hand, the 19th between the clubs since the Ramblers were formed in 1946. The first game was in fact the Ramblers' second ever match on July 28th 1946 and their side included Jack Parker of Surrey. It is likely that the long gap 1956-1992 when the clubs did not meet (as shown in a synopsis below) would only be confirmed by the scorebooks of the period, as the Ramblers were made up from a core of Brook's Saturday players - 2 Gauntletts; 2 Hardys; 2 Woods etc. and the clubs went their separate ways on a Sunday. Brook Sunday in the '50s and '60s almost ran as a separate club.

It is noted that the Club's President, Lionel Wood returned the second best bowling figures in these games (7-32 in 1953). Jon Stonebridge's 100* in the 1995 fixture has only been bettered by Duncan Whittaker's 105* in 1952.

From a letter circulated to all Oxford Downs CC Members from the Club's Hon. Secretary 21/06/02 following devastating fire which burnt down part of their Pavilion ahead of Cricket Week in which they were due to entertain the Ramblers.

"Herewith a short progress report following the loss of our Clubhouse. As mentioned in the Chairman's recent letter, cricket continuers at all levels, League, Sundays and Juniors. We have however had to make alterations both to starting times and catering for cricket week, as providing Down's type lunches is, in the circumstances, impossible. The all-day games, 30th June to 4th July, will now start at 1.30 and be followed by a Barbecue in the evening."

Downs/Ramblers fixture is Tuesday, July 2nd.
