EMERITI

FRIDAY 17TH AUGUST  2001

at  Brook.

Ramblers won by 116 runs

The Ramblers produced a winning performance in this match - their first after the successful and enjoyable tour to Oporto. On a pleasant warm day at Brook, skipper of the day, Simon Swainson, won the toss and decided to bat, and by lunch the Ramblers had 221-4 on the board, albeit against some fairly friendly bowling. Ryan Jacobs and James Wood for a time looked like threatening the record stand which Ryan was a part of earlier in the season, but were parted at 146. James went on to a splendid 100 - which at the age of 15 years 11 months, those on the ground reckoned makes him the Ramblers youngest centurion - and brought him the award of a Ramblers cap at tea time. With Hugh Gauntlett carving his way to 60 and others chipping in, the declaration came at 307 for 8 in 48 overs (the second triple of the year).

THE RAMBLERS' YOUNGEST CENTURION WITH HIS CAP.

Presented to James Wood, 15 years 11  months.

Emeriti made a bad start - Graham Boxall removing both openers for ducks to close catches, and apart from Phillips who made a well struck 50, no other batter really got going to a substantial score. In what would have been the penultimate over (the 56th), James Wood completed a great personal day by clutching a close diving catch millimetres from the ground to close Emeriti’s innings on 191 and seal the win by 116 runs. The wickets were shared about - including two each for Martin Charter and Ryan Jacobs. And then on to the Dog and Pheasant !
