at Brook, Friday July 13th. Weather: Sunny periods; rain later.
Toss won by Sydenhurst Ramblers.
Match drawn (rain).
Sydenhurst chose to bat on a good wicket but were a calamitous 60/5 after an hour, despite some violent blows from Paul Vickers. 13 year old debutant James Walker batted with admirable composure and played some fine strokes. Simon Swainson also batted responsibly up to the stroke of lunch in a stand of 69. Walker was unlucky not to get his 50.
Sydenhurst's total was 50 fewer than hoped for. Luckily Clem Williams and Rodney Marshall bowled long, thrifty spells which put the required run rate up and up. Williams beat the outside edge repeatedly and worked up a good pace, while Marshall's gentle away swingers tied down batsmen reluctant to use their feet. The game was interestingly poised when a deluge arrived to wash out the last 16 overs.
