CANADA TOUR - Player Profiles
Trevor Kidson: Club Captain; Trevor is
a schoolmaster at Bradfield near Reading, having relatively recently moved from
a teaching appointment at Eastbourne College. He keeps wicket, and is an
aggressive middle order batsman. Trevor has completed (just) a number of the
Ramblers tours. He can normally be found on tour under tables in bars, sleeping.
John Hamilton: John hails from Northern Ireland, where he played, and
still does occasionally, for North of Ireland CC. He is an opening bat and a
medium pace bowler. John has for the last few years been a teacher at Amesbury
preparatory school near Haslemere, and presently captains and plays for Brook
Strollers' one of the two Sunday sides of Brook CC. He is also a Free Forester
and a Cryptic - which neans he is known for making enigmatic comments in woods
at no charge. He is one of only two of the present tourists to have made all the
Ramblers overseas tours.
Brian Davenport: The other tourist to have made all the Ramblers' tours
(and it shows), Brian is an Army Officer in the Royal Anglian Regiment based in
Colchester, and a regular Brook CC player. He bats anywhere he is told to and
purveys a form of left arm spin, which he maintains is full of flight and guile
- others simply refer to it as filth. He has a questionable taste in headgear,
and has no hesitation in appearing in front of the camcorder on tour for his
Ritchiesque comments on the state of play (and anything else).
Jon Stonebridge: Another regular Ramblers tourist, Jon does something in
computers to earn a crust. He is an early order batsman and medium pace seam
bowler who plays his club cricket for Ealing. He will almost certainly take the
new ball-, hopefully to bowl with it. He is a fine fielder and catcher (except
in Gibraltar).
Steve Andow: Steve has been on most of our tours; is a regular for Stort
CC (in Essex), and runs an occasional side titled the Badgers. He is primarily a
medium pace bowler - 'strangler ' is a word which springs to mind, but also
wields the willow highly effectively in moments of crisis - which means his
services are regularly required by the Ramblers.
Bob O'Dwyer: Bob left the Army a few years ago after serving in the Royal
Anglian regiment, and now lives and works in London, latterly in catering
management, where he has done considerable work at the Lord's pavilion, for Test
Matches and one day Finals. This has led to a tendency to casually drop the
names of present and past Test cricketers that he has fed and watered, but it
has not noticeably rubbed off on his game. He is a middle order bat, and an
enthusiastic fielder, who plays nost of his cricket for the Regiment.
Wallace Graham: From Northern Ireland, a banker by profession and a
member of North of Ireland CC, this tour will be be his debut with the Ramblers.
A friend of John Hamilton, who reports that Wally was educated at Campbell
College, is well known for his post rugby international exploits, and is wanted
by the police forces on both sides of the Irish border for Guinness related
offences.
James Ransome: The youngest member of the party, James is a regular for
Brook Strollers and is a free scoring batsman -a legend has it that he has
scored more centuries for them than he has taken wickets. He has recently
completed university which probably accounts for a reputation for hollow legs.
He can (and will be) because of his comparative youth be relied upon to leg it
round the outfield, to field balls which the senior pros have judiciously
flagged through.
Jason Wilson: Known as 'Beefy', for reasons difficult to comprehend,
Jason is a strong batsman, a left arm medium pace bowler, and plays for
Petersfield CC. He works for an organisation called Augustus Oils, but it is not
clear whether
this is part of the petrochemical industry, or a company producing Caesarian
hair dressings. Can be relied upon to hold his end up socially.
Jeremy Parr: A Brook CC regular for many years, Jeremy is a left hand
opening bat and a fine close fielder, and this is his first Ramblers tour -
although he has played for the club on many occasions. He recently scored a
century for Brook against the Ramblers, but this is only beinq held against himn
until he scores one for us.
George Adams: Made his first Ramblers tour to Gibraltar last summer, and
will probably be joining us in BC under separate travel arrangements (he
understandibly doesn't want to be too closely associated with the party). Goerge
is an all-rounder, specialising in off spin bowling - which has been known to
turn (heads not balls).
THE LADIES
Sue Andow and Jane Hughes: Sue is Steve's wife, and Jane comes with Jon
Stonebridge. Both are experienced Ramblers tourists, so are well aware of the
previous eccentric behaviour of the menfolk on and off the field; they have
seldom been disappointed, and are unlikely to be this time round. It is
difficult to describe adequately the subtle blend of charm, beauty and
intelligence that both ladies have in abundance; they race the tone of the
touring party to levels which only the most optimistic could aspire to.
