It was disappointing to lose after an excellent bowling and catching display. The Hogs chose to bat on a glorious morning. Manley bowled a lovely opening spell and Oakes wheeled away up the slope in economical fashion. The Hogs found scoring difficult and we whistled through forty overs by lunch despite a slightly late start thanks to Fred “Hangover” Pennell. James Bishop bowled very well indeed but the star of the bowling show was Graham Boxall who delivered 18 consecutive overs of off-spin to finish with the excellent analysis of 5/48. Brian Davenport, after a start which suggested a lack of vitamins, settled into a rhythm too, and snared the crucial wicket (the Colonel’s 99th Ramblers victim) of Came who walloped a friendly full toss in the direction of mid-off and could count himself remarkably unlucky to fall to a running catch by James Straker, the first of two smart catches taken by someone who normally epitomises laziness in the field. Equally bizarre was the sight of the captain rolling the Hogs’ square for them by effecting several diving stops in the covers. The declaration came after 64 overs.
Unfortunately, we lost Ed Bishop in the second over but Alan Foster and James Straker began to assert themselves with the latter looking particularly dangerous and striking some lovely clean blows. The game changed in the 8th over, with the score already on 42. The new bowler’s first short, wide delivery was chased by Straker who feathered it to the wicketkeeper. Boxall’s first ball was a wide; his second was a half-volley on his pads which he whipped with beautiful timing high and hard to the square-leg boundary where it fell straight into the hands of the one deep fielder on the leg-side. Came now began to toss up inviting off-breaks and snared Foster, whilst Tom Williams, fresh from his maiden century in the League the previous day and the ensuing celebrations, was unable to repeat the feat. Hamilton and Pennell added 56 in reasonable time but, with a maximum of 47 overs to get the runs, chances had to be taken and Came ended up with 6/38.
Undoubtedly, we played some good cricket but we needed someone to play a major anchoring role as Kelly had done for the home side. Finally, it was good that six of the Malta tour party turned out in this fixture.
